SECURE STORAGE

Responsible firearms ownership is something that all of us should take very seriously. The SSAA has been an active campaigner of firearms safety for many, many years. It is your responsibility to ensure your firearms are secure so do the right thing: Secure Your Gun, Secure Your Sport.

SECURE STORAGE REQUIREMENTS OVERVIEW

Section 94 of the Weapons Regulation 2016 (QLD) provides that for sporting shooters, Category A, B and C Firearms must be stored in be a rigid structure made of solid steel or solid
timber; and if the container weighs less than 150kg, it must be securely fixed to the frame or floor of a permanent building.

The container must also have a sturdy combination lock, keyed lock or keyed padlock and firearms must be stored with the bolt removed or action broken.

Handguns must be stored in a rigid structure made of solid steel, with a sturdy combination lock, keyed lock or keyed padlock and be bolted to the frame or floor of a permanent building.

Stricter storage requirements apply for premises with more than 30 firearms stored there; for more information contact Weapons Licensing or see Part 20 of the Weapons Regulation 2016 (QLD).

SSAA Queensland recommends buying a proper gun safe, such as those highlighted in the current Secure Your Gun, Secure Your Sport brochure.

SECURE STORAGE INSPECTIONS BY QUEENSLAND POLICE

Queensland Police conduct audits to ensure the obligations of general licensed firearm owners in relation to secure storage of their firearms are being met in accordance with the provisions set out in their license applications.

The Queensland Police Service has stated licence holders selected for audits will be given advanced notice of the inspection, which will be arranged through the local police.

Firearm secure storage inspections are not inconsistent with SSAA’s “Secure your gun, Secure your sport” philosophy and serve to demonstrate that our Members take a responsible approach to firearm ownership.

We urge you to ensure you have all current licences and relevant documentation readily at hand and offer every courtesy and co-operation to the inspecting officers as we DO expect the appropriate courtesies from them.

If you have any specific problems or issues, you can get further information from  S.S.A.A. (QLD) Inc.
