Field Rifle 3 and 4 Position

This discipline is made up of 3 sections - Field Rifle (Rimfire and Centrefire) , Rimfire NRA 3 Position Rifle and Centrefire International 4 Position Rifle.

Field Rifle

The SSAA's founding discipline and also the one that is most practically applicable to the vast bulk of shooters and hunters. The discipline consists of 2 main events plus 2 supplementary events. All the Field Rifle events are aimed at improving hunters’ skills, and accuracy in field positions at realistic ranges.

Rimfire Field Rifle

This is shot with a sporting weight scoped .22lr calibre rifle at 2 ranges using 4positions. This is a very popular event that can be shot on any 50m rimfire range.

  • 4 lots of 3 shots rapid fire in the standing unsupported position at 25m in 15 seconds for each group of 3 shots
  • 10 shots slow-fire at 25m in the offhand position
  • 10 shots slow-fire at 50m in the post supported standing position
  • 10 shots slow-fire in the sitting post supported position at 50m.

Centrefire Field Rifle

This is shot with a sporting weight scoped centrefire rifle up to 8mm in calibre at 4 ranges in the same 4 positions as Rimfire Field Rifle. This event is very popular but heavily restricted by the need for a 200m centrefire range.

  • 4 lots of 3 shots rapid fire in the standing unsupported position at 25m in 15 seconds for each group of 3 shots
  • 10 shots slow-fire at 50m in the offhand position
  • 10 shots slow-fire at 100m in the post supported standing position
  • 10 shots slow-fire in the sitting post supported position at 200m.

Centrefire Field Rifle Short Course

This is an event brought about by the loss of several prominent 200m ranges in Qld where Centrefire Field Rifle was a major event in Branch activities. The Branches retained 100m Centrefire ranges, and as this type of boutique 100m range was foreseen as the future in our increasingly urbanised landscape, the Short Course event was developed to suit. Rules are largely the same as for Centrefire Field Rifle with the exception that rifles may be of any Centrefire calibre and the sitting post supported position is shot at 100m on the 100m target. This event is enormously popular on all ranges; so much so, that the extra 10 shots sitting post on the 100m target is shot at the Qld State Championships to give scores in both classes of Centrefire Field Rifle.

Magnum Rimfire Field Rifle

This is an event very similar to Rimfire Field Rifle with the following differences - Rifles are chambered for either .22 magnum, 5mm Remington magnum, .17 HMR or .17 mach2. This class of rifles is very popular with hunters and the event was developed to allow competition with a class of rifles where no other existed. Course of fire is the same except that the sitting post supported position is shot at 100m on the centrefire 100m target.

NRA Rimfire 3 Position

This is an international precision rifle event that uses scoped 22lr calibre rifles in the Offhand, Kneeling and Prone positions at 50m. The rifle specifications are extremely open; you can use an Olympic Free rifle with a telescopic sight, palm rest and single point sling. Also the full range of leather and canvas shooting clothing and boots are allowed. This is truly an event for the precision enthusiast. It is the only event in this discipline with an International component that sees a national team travel to the USA every 2 years to compete.

International Centrefire Scoped 4 Position Rifle

This is a precision rifle match that uses centrefire rifles in calibres up to 8mm in the Prone, Sitting, Kneeling and Offhand positions at 100m. The rifle specifications are more restricted than Rimfire 3P, though a single point sling and shooting jacket are allowed. This event was previously contested internationally but no longer is and nothing worthwhile has yet replaced it.

The SSAA Qld State Championships consist of:

  • Rimfire Field Rifle
  • Centrefire Field Rifle with the extra 10 shots for the Short Course
  • NRA Rimfire 3 Position
  • International Centrefire 4 Position

It is a 2 day event usually held in August and it is very well attended.

The National Championships go for a full week over Easter, including both the Field Rifle main events, the NRA Rimfire 3 Position as well as other Air Rifle , Rimfire and Centrefire Position Rifle activities . Rule books covering these events are the SSAA National Field Rifle Rule Book, the SSAA Scoped Air Rifle Rule Book, the SSAA Guide to NRA Smallbore Rifle Rules and the International 4 Position Rifle Rule Book. All the above are attached to this site except the 4 Position Rule Book which is not yet available in electronic format and may be requested from the State Chairman.
